"BASES EMPTY": The Decline of African-Americans in Baseball' is a feature length documentary that takes a careful, insightful look at the declining participation of African-Americans in baseball. Altough it focuses primarily on the lack of participation at the professional level, it takes a critical look at factors that contribute to the apparent lack of interest African-American boys, adolescents and young men have in the sport of baseball at the amateur levels.

Curtis Granderson Stadium Project read more

New York Yankee centerfielder and UIC alum Curtis Granderson has pledged the funding for a new multi-million dollar baseball stadium on the campus of UIC. The facility will be home for Flames Baseball, but more importantly, is intended to serve area youth and the Chicago community. Curtis hopes to offer at risk kids in Chicago many of the same opportunities that he had growing up. He is a strong believer in education, and has a history of raising money for the education of inner-city youth. We estimate that this innovative program will serve 13,000 at risk children a year.

Curtis has taken a major step in attempting to curb youth violence and illiteracy through the creation of a sports and educational facility that will enable children in Chicago to play baseball year round in a university setting that's safe and accessible.

This project will be the largest anti-violence after school matters program in Chicago. We hope to make it a blue print for other organizations across the country that wish to provide sports, music, arts and educational programming to youth in underserved communities.
